SCRUNCH PAINTING

This fabric is stress-free and just plain fun to paint. It’s a wonderful piece to cut up for leaves, rocks, flower petals, and loads of other features. Because each time the results are different, and often unexpected, I’ve had students who, once introduced to this technique, want nothing more than to spend a day painting dozens of them.

SUPPLIES

For information on paint and supplies, see Tools and Equipment for Painting Fabric.

• Black transparent paint

• Sandy brown transparent paint

• Warm brown transparent paint

• Gray transparent paint

• Pearl metallic opaque paint

• 3 or 4 brushes

• Containers for mixing paints

• Misting spray bottle

• White fabric

Mixing Paints

1. Add some pearl metallic to a couple of your browns for highlights in the finished piece.

2. Test the colors on a dampened test cloth.

Painting Scrunch Fabric

Note: Use a lot of paint for this application, completely covering the fabric.

1. Dampen the fabric.

2. To apply a good saturation of paint quickly, hold the paint container over your work. I have found that placing the container too far away from their work makes people worry about dripping paint and, therefore, prevents them from loading enough paint on the brush.
